Dr. Alexandra Carter

Dr. Alexandra Carter began her career in healthcare as a social worker after earning her Master of Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University. She worked closely with children in the foster care system, where she developed a deep commitment to supporting vulnerable and marginalized populations. Inspired to expand her impact, she pursued medical training at Howard University College of Medicine and returned to VCU for her residency in General Psychiatry. She completed a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.

Dr. Carter is currently a forensic psychiatry fellow at the University of Maryland Medical System and Clifton T. Perkins Hospital Center. Her clinical and academic interests center on the intersection of mental health, trauma, and the justice system.

As a board member of the Amara Legal Center, Dr. Carter brings her expertise in trauma-informed care and her dedication to advancing equitable access to justice for survivors of exploitation.
