June 18, 2018. The Board of Directors of the Amara Legal Center is pleased to announce that they have named Llamilet Gutierrez as their next Executive Director. The Amara Legal Center is a legal services organization based in Washington, DC. The core mission of the Amara Legal Center is to provide free legal services to individuals whose rights have been violated through involvement in commercial sex, whether that involvement was by choice, coercion or circumstance.
“We are exceptionally pleased to welcome Llamilet Gutierrez as our new Executive Director,” said Sakala Rutherford, Vice President of the Board. “Llami brings a wealth of experience providing legal representation to underserved individuals in our region, as well as excellent organizational and management skills honed through her extensive volunteer work with our local bar associations. Llami’s strong leadership abilities, coupled with her passion for our client population will provide the organization with innovative approaches and increased service delivery.”
Llami has been an advocate and supporter of Amara’s work over the past four years. In her most recent role as a public defender at the Office of the Public Defender in Prince George’s County, Maryland, Llami had the opportunity to represent many clients who had been involved in commercial sex, many of whom were survivors of sex trafficking. Llami has an outstanding reputation among her fellow lawyers and has demonstrated a wealth of leadership skills through her varied volunteer work.
Llami has six years of experience as a practicing lawyer. She holds a J.D. from Lewis & Clark Law School in Portland, OR and a B.A. from Dickinson College, PA. Llami is licensed to practice law in Maryland. Llami is the treasurer for the Prince George’s County Bar Association, board member of the Maryland Hispanic Bar Association, and Chair of the Bench-Bar Section Council for the Maryland State Bar Association.
